In this lesson, we will explore three very small but important words in the English language: the articles a, an and the. These are word that we use in almost every sentence that you speak or write. Learn about the significance of articles when to use them and some examples.

Article is a word use to modify a noun which is a person, place and thing.

 

1. Definite- The- is used to refer any particular noun. (specific things).

E.g. – The cat. The dog. The girl. The school.

2. Indefinite- A, An- dose not refer particular noun. (General things).

      E.g. – do you have a pencil?  I want to have an apple.

 

 

1. An – an with singular noun beginning with a vowel.

E.g.-  An elephant.

2. A – a with singular noun beginning with a consonant.

E.g.-  A teacher.

3. The – for singular and plural nouns but noun have to be specific. (use the before all plural noun).

E.g. – The Netherlands. The Philippines 

 

 

1. A, An – use only with singular countable noun.

E.g. – A car, An onion.

2. We use A, An for job.

E.g. – I’m a teacher. He’s an engineer.

3. We use A, An, when we say what a thing or a person is.

E.g. – Football is a game. A mouse is an animal.

3. We use the with name of oceans, seas, rivers, canals.

E.g. – The Atlantic Ocean. The Black sea. The Amazon river. The Hamilton canal.  

4. We use the with name of hotels, restaurants, pubs, cinemas, theaters, museums.

 

 

             Use no articles in this situation.

1.     Proper nouns- names of people, places.

Example; Steve, New York.

2.     Names of games and language.

Example; tennis, French.

3.     No use the with name of streets, buildings.

4.     No use the with name of place with airport, station university.

E.g.- Colombo airport, Oxford university, Victoria station.

5. Fixed expressions

E.g. - At home, go to bed, travel by bus, on Sunday.

Introduction

In this lesson, I will teach about nouns. Noun is a name that we can call animate and inanimate like thing, person and place.

Procedure

There are six types of nouns. They are;

1.     Countable nouns

2.     Uncountable nouns

3.     Proper nouns

4.     Common nouns

5.     Collective nouns

6.     Abstract nouns

Countable nouns

Countable nouns are those that refer to something that can be counted. They are singular and plural form.

For example; book, table, tree, star, radio etc.

Uncountable nouns

Uncountable nouns do not typically refer to things that can be counted and they have only plural form.

For example; sand, tea, hair, salt, sugar, etc.

 

Proper nouns

A proper noun is a name that identifies a particular person, place, or thing.

For example; Buddha, New York, United Nations, Jesus Christ etc.

Note: proper nouns begin with capital letters.

Common nouns

A common noun is a noun that refers to people or things in general.

For example; woman, boy, doctor, leader, teacher, worker etc.

Collective nouns

Collective nouns refer to groups of people or things.

For example; army, staff, family, nation, team, association etc.

Abstract nouns

An abstract noun is a noun which refers to ideas, qualities and conditions that cannot be seen or touched and things which know in our mind.

For example; hatred, love, compassion, honesty, wisdom, death etc.
